SPIRITUAL COUNSELING IS A MAIEUTIC METHOD

Spiritual Counseling techniques are based on the principle that everyone possesses an innate spiritual understanding of his or her own truth, sufficient to change or remedy it. Accordingly, a spiritual counselor's duty is NOT to explain or analyze or solve their problem---but to facilitate the client's connection with their own truth, power, and enlightenment.

Spiritual Counselors direct the client's attention into an area where they may not have been willing or able to look on their own. The most effective way to do this is by asking questions rather than by giving information, lecturing, or analyzing.

In the field of philosophy, there is a spiritual counseling technique known as the Maieutic [Ma*you'*tic] Method. In this method, innate wisdom is elicited through asking questions as opposed to the didactic method in which information is imparted through lecturing, explaining, or analyzing.

Most traditional counselors use the Didactic Method. It is associated with Socrates who is said to have utilized it. When a practitioner (no matter how well trained or well intentioned) voices his/her "didactic" opinion about a client to that client, there are several dangers. The other danger is that the counselor's opinion might be correct, but the client will feel accused and reject or deny it anyway.

The spiritual counseling Maieutic Method allows clients to experience truth and understanding about themselves through a process of discovery that validates their own internal awareness and intuitive feelings rather than making them dependent on their practitioner.
